Gerald J. Micklow is the director of the Florida Center of Automotive Research (FCAR) and the head of the graduate Automotive Engineering program at the Florida Institute of Technology.

At the University of Alabama, Mechanical Engineering Department, he moved my research into automotive applications. He helped to start the Center for Advanced Vehicle Technology (CAVT) which is still in existence and thriving today.

At the University of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNCC), he was one of the key contributors to start the Motorsports Engineering program within the Mechanical Engineering department. There, he together with his students worked directly for four of the most competitive NASCAR teams in existence today. He brought NASA into NASCAR.   He helped to start the North Carolina Motorsports and Automotive Research Center (NCMARC).

In 1995, he was awarded the SAE Ralph Teetor Award for teaching excellence. He has received continuous funding from NASA and various government institutions since 1988. He was inducted into the U.S. Space Institute Innovative Technology Hall of Fame in April 2000. In October 2002, He was given the NASA Space Act Award for work related to the Space Shuttle. In 2009, He received the SAE Faculty Advisor award. In 2016, he received the ASME Outstanding Professor of the Year award. In 2017 he received the ASME Outstanding Research Professor of the Year award.

Further, over the last 8 years, Dr. Micklow has chaired 42 technical sessions for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in exhaust and particulate emissions systems, direct injection spark and compression ignition engines, fuel injection and sprays, HCCI combustion, hybrid electric vehicle powertrains, high efficiency engine concepts, multidimensional engine modeling, on-board diagnostics, fuels and fuel additives, cold start characteristics, engine boosting systems, dual fuel combustion, spark assisted compression ignition combustion and heavy duty lubricants.  He is an associate editor for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants.
