He received both his BS and MS from Penn State in Aerospace Engineering. He has eight years of industrial experience during which he maintained a top-secret security clearance designing advanced aircraft and missile configurations. He then went to Virginia Tech as full time faculty to obtain his PhD. He secured his own funding from Allison Gas Turbines to perform the computational analysis of transonic compressor blades for his dissertation. After completing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, he moved on to the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor. There, he developed graduate level courses in computational fluid dynamics, graduate level courses in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, and undergraduate courses in internal combustion engines, fluid dynamics, aircraft propulsion, compressible flow, numerical analysis and thermodynamics.
At the University of Alabama, Mechanical Engineering Department, he moved my research into automotive applications. He helped to start the Center for Advanced Vehicle Technology (CAVT) which is still in existence and thriving today.
At the University of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNCC), he was one of the key contributors to start the Motorsports Engineering program within the Mechanical Engineering department. There, he together with his students worked directly for four of the most competitive NASCAR teams in existence today. He brought NASA into NASCAR. He helped to start the North Carolina Motorsports and Automotive Research Center (NCMARC).
In 1995, he was awarded the SAE Ralph Teetor Award for teaching excellence. He has received continuous funding from NASA and various government institutions since 1988. He was inducted into the U.S. Space Institute Innovative Technology Hall of Fame in April 2000. In October 2002, He was given the NASA Space Act Award for work related to the Space Shuttle. In 2009, He received the SAE Faculty Advisor award. In 2016, he received the ASME Outstanding Professor of the Year award. In 2017 he received the ASME Outstanding Research Professor of the Year award.
Further, over the last 8 years, Dr. Micklow has chaired 45 technical sessions for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in exhaust and particulate emissions systems, direct injection spark and compression ignition engines, fuel injection and sprays, fuel economy, HCCI combustion, hybrid electric vehicle powertrains, high efficiency engine concepts, multidimensional engine modeling, on-board diagnostics, fuels and fuel additives, cold start characteristics, engine boosting systems, dual fuel combustion, spark assisted compression ignition combustion and heady duty lubricants. He is an associate editor for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants.
Currently, he is a Full Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at the Florida Institute of Technology, and the head of Automotive Engineering. His research over the years has been heavily funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, Argonne National Labs, NavAir, Cummins, Caterpillar and others. Areas of interest are jet and rocket propulsion systems, low carbon emissions, advanced low pollutant emission, high efficiency combustion systems for advanced aircraft and automotive applications, alternative fuels and renewable energy systems.
Dr. Micklow has been deposed and testified in court over 60 times as an expert witness involving the design and analysis of advanced Mechanical Engineering systems. Further, he has been been involved with numerous cases an expert related to intellectual property and patent litigation.
